Noticed my mpg dropping, could it be something serious?

I've been keeping track of my fuel economy lately and I've noticed it's definitely gotten worse over the past month or so. The car seems to be running fine otherwise, no strange lights or anything, but I know from reading that poor efficiency can sometimes be an early clue that something isn't right. I came across an article that listed all the common signs of old or dirty oil, and it got me thinking about preventing engine wear and damage before it becomes a big problem. The article mentioned that when oil gets old, the engine has to work harder, which burns more fuel. I'm due for a service in a couple months, but I'm wondering if I should just get the oil changed sooner to see if it fixes the fuel economy and helps keep the engine healthy. Has anyone else experienced this, and did an early oil change solve it for you?
